1 Peter 2:9-10, Part B

October 21, 2018

When an identity crisis happens, when trials of life come your way, when society rejects you, like it did Christ, it is crucial for you to remember who you are. Do not forget who God says you are: a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people who are to worship God, a people who were in the darkness but are now in the light, a people for God’s possession, and a people who have received mercy. Thank you for listening. The Church at Pecan Creek is located in Denton, Texas. We invite you to join us each Sunday at 10 AM. The New Testament makes a lot more sense when you understand the Old Testament. Long story short, in order to be a part of God’s Chosen People, His Royal Priesthood, and a citizen of His Holy Nation, you must be in the New Covenant which is made by Jesus Christ. Peter uses an architectural metaphor to describe Jesus Christ. In the building process, much effort would be taken to examine the stones to make sure that they were fit the construction of a building or house. If stones were weak, fractured, or inadequate, they were rejected, thrown away, and considered useless. During the time of Jesus, and ever since, many have looked and rejected Christ from their lives. Think back to His time on earth; the Pharisees, Sadducees, scribes, the Sanhedrin, and the High Priests all hated Him and wanted Him dead. This fact was a common point in Peter’s sermons. You, as a Christian, are part of something much larger than yourself. Your Christianity is not meant to be kept private. If it is, you are missing out. You are part of a much larger structure with God as the architect. You are a priest, set apart by God, for God. Be aware that just as Jesus was the Chosen One of God, yet rejected by man, you too may experience the same rejection by this world. However, do not forget you are precious to God. Christians are to put away sinfulness, all sinfulness. If we do not put away our individual sins, then it affects not only you but all those that you are supposed to be loving in the family of God. Don’t be a malnourished Christian, feed on the truths of the Gospel, and feed on all of God’s Word.

Your reverence for God should affect your daily conduct. This is not your home, so don’t act like it is. Believers are commanded to love one another. God has caused you to be born again with imperishable seed through the word of God. The glory of man rises and falls, but your salvation is permanent. Thank you for listening. The Christian life is far more than just an emotional experience. Our salvation is based on real history, facts, and truths given to us by God through the Prophets and the Apostles. In light of all that God has done, we are to look forward and set our bearings on the fact that we will one day be with Jesus Christ, and fully embrace what it means to be saved by the grace of God. We are to set our hope on that fact, and we are to do so by using our minds. Actively prepare your mind for action. The Christian mind should not be in neutral, idle, saturated with entertainment. Prepare to fight, to run, to work for God. And be careful that you don’t allow your mind to become inebriated by the things and desires of this world. Thank you for listening. As far as redemption history goes, we see salvation more clearly than any of the Old Testament saints and prophets. They had pieces, we have the whole picture. They pondered questions about how the Messiah would take away our sins; be a man yet also God; live, die, and rise from the dead; be a servant yet be the King with a kingdom that will never end; etc. We now have those answers, and most importantly, we understand more about the salvation that God has provided by grace alone, through faith alone, in the Christ alone. This section of Peter’s letter is a theologically rich doxology/praise of God. It is not only Peter’s praise to God for salvation, but a lesson to his audience and to us about salvation. The lesson is, no matter what rejection you face in this world, no matter how bad things become, don’t lose hope in Christ. For you as a child of God, always have reason to hope, because your hope is a living hope that is in the One who lived, died, and rose from the dead. The certainty of full and complete future salvation should create a beautiful reality of hope in which to live now, on a daily basis. Bask in these truths for a moment, and you will begin to sense that multiplication/increase of grace and peace that Peter spoke of: You, as an adopted child of God, by the plan of God, the sanctification of the Holy Spirit, and the shedding of the blood of Christ have a living Hope that is directly linked to the risen Lord Jesus Christ. Your future salvation and inheritance are as certain as His resurrection was in the past. Thank you for listening. The Church at Pecan Creek is located in Denton, Texas. Think of the comfort that Peter’s audience of persecuted believers felt when they heard an Apostle of Jesus Christ tell them that no matter how the world viewed them, no matter the level of rejection, isolation, or persecution they experienced, they were elect exiles, who had an eternal home, by the eternal plan of God the Father, the sanctifying work of the Spirit, and the blood of Jesus, the Son of God! Salvation from beginning to end is a supernatural work of God. If you have been saved, the exact same truths of salvation can be said of you as well. You are elect exiles, you have an eternal home by the eternal plan of the God the Father, the sanctifying work of the Spirit, and the blood of Jesus, the Son of God! Take this truth into your mind and your life will be turned upside down as you bask in the reality of your identity, Whose you are, by the grace of God. Salvation is far more amazing than you can imagine, and the more you learn about it from the Word of God, the more beautiful it will become to you. Thank you for listening.
