In this short book, you are given three examples of how professing Christians were living. May two of them serve as wonderful examples of how we are to life out the Christian life, and may the other serve as an example of how not to live out the Christian life. Examples in Scripture or in your life today are wonderful to have. Look to those who are following Christ well, walking in the truth, and imitate them as they imitate Christ.

John wraps up his good report and his warning, with his desire to talk face to face that their joy may be complete. No matter the method you use to reach out to other believers that you love, there is an incompleteness until you are with them and able to speak face to face. John acknowledges the worth of contacting one another, in this case, by writing, but also knows that the greatest joy comes in person. Let us remember that as well. We should not find ourselves isolated from other Christians when we can be with one another in person face to face. We should do what we can to stay in touch when we can’t be together in person, as John did. We need to realize like John did, that the greatest joy of Christian fellowship comes in person.

Knowing the truth and living out the truth are something that we must all continually work on. Walking in the truth, as we have seen, is about your whole life. It is personal holiness, but it is also about your interactions with one another. As you walk, seek personal holiness, let your light shine before others, and strive to keep unity with fellow Christians.

Do you believe in the truth that John is referring to, the truth of the good news of Jesus Christ and what He has done to accomplish your salvation? If so, then you can be comforted that you have received grace, mercy and peace from God. If Christ is not who you trust in for salvation, then any grace, mercy, or peace that you may think you have is only an illusion. Repent, and believe in the truth today.

God gives elders to churches to help shepherd His flock. This is the normative manner of church structure that we see in the Bible. Also, don’t view God’s sovereignty in election as something bad. Early Christians found this doctrine to be a great source of peace for their soul and we should as well.

April 26, 2020 The facts of the Christian faith are important, because they have been given to us by God. As John ends his letter, he calls us to remember who Jesus is and who we are as children of God. This was great comfort for their souls then, as well as ours today. Thank you for listening. Remember - Easter 2020

April 12, 2020 Key passage: Luke 24 It is easy to get distracted by the world. We must remind ourselves of the resurrection and what it means for us regularly because we are prone to distractions and forgetfulness. Jesus rose from the dead, and that changes everything. The resurrection reminds us that we can trust everything else that Jesus said. The resurrection reminds us that He is truly the Savior. The resurrection reminds us that the sacrifice for our sin was accepted by God the Father. The resurrection reminds us that we are now at peace with God. The resurrection reminds us that we will rise as well. When times of despair, hopelessness, sorrow, confusion, come your way, Remember the resurrection and find comfort for your soul. The water, the blood, and the Spirit are called upon to give the believers rest, comfort, and assurance that they truly have eternal life. The same comfort that these believers received from the words of John, we should receive as well. Do you have eternal life? Do these three witnesses come to your defense, or do they speak against you? If you hear these truths and find rest, take great comfort by what they say you, “You have eternal life.” If today you hear of these witnesses, and realize for the first time that you hear them speaking and you agree with their words, then do as the scriptures command, repent and believe in Jesus Christ the Son of God.
