1 Peter 5:10-14

February 10, 2019

Peter summarized his letter by urging the recipients to stand firm in the grace of God even while they are suffering, understanding that their salvation was safe in the One who began the work. They would suffer for a time in this life, but they would be blessed for all of eternity. God would personally restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish each of them, and so it is with us today. We know that we are saved by grace, through faith, in Jesus Christ. The more we understand the grace of God in salvation, the more we are able to stand firm in the faith. Thank you for listening. The Church at Pecan Creek is located in Denton, Texas. We invite you to join us each Sunday at 10 AM. For more information visit our website, http://www.thechurchatpecancreek.com.

A powerful enemy is on the loose that seeks to devour you. You must be on the lookout for his attacks, knowing that suffering is often one of the main tactics he uses. Don’t give in to Satan, or your sinful desires that are in alignment with his desires. Resist, trust God, and continue to stand firm in your faith. Thank you for listening. After spending most of his letter speaking to all of the Christians, Peter takes a moment to remind the elders to shepherd as God has commanded them. He encourages submission to the elders by those who are usually the most obstinate. He then exhorts the entire church to practice humility towards one another and to God. Even in their time of suffering, Peter instructs them to cast off their anxieties and trust that the God who has saved them continues to care for them. Thank you for listening. If you are living and believing as a Christian, don’t expect to be loved by a sinful world. Instead, as we live godly lives and proclaim Jesus Christ, we should not be surprised by suffering, but be surprised if we do not suffer. When you get treated as Christ did, rejoice, because you are representing Christ, and the world sees that. But what can the world do to you? Even sinner’s worst insults are blessings. No matter what suffering we have to face in this life, we should never forget that even our suffering comes at the will of God. We may not fully understand our suffering, but we trust in a God who does. It will lead to our betterment, and to His glory. Thank you for listening. A life of putting away human sinful passions, seeking to obey the will of God, understanding the temporary nature of this life, should lead one to be clear-minded so that we can regularly engage in prayer to God, and service to our fellow Christians Thank you for listening. Arm yourselves by embracing obedience to God no matter what the cost or the level of suffering and rejection that you might face. Salvation involves both right belief and right behavior; therefore, both should be emphasized. Peter reminds them again that they are not to live for human passions; instead, they should live for the will of God. Time is important. Time is limited. Time should be spent wisely. Now that you have been saved by God, don’t use this limited, valuable time on earth to live in sin, but glorify God with your life. He says don’t live as you used to, he includes sin in general, but then list out sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. When you don’t engage with others in sin, at first, they are surprised, but quite often their surprise turns to malign. However, we must remember that unbelievers are not the Judge, only God is the Judge of the living and the dead. Thank you for listening. The Church at Pecan Creek is located in Denton, Texas. What it means to live in Christian community desperately needs to be revisited today by the modern church. Christians have been trained to have an extremely minimalistic view of their Christianity and no longer see the need for deep Christian fellowship and interaction. These opening verses by Peter are a punch in the gut to modern Christianity. Are you striving to live in Christian community with unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind? If you have been caught up in modern-day church attendance, "check the box, done for the week" mentality, then you are falling way. You will be short of arriving at the level of Christian intimacy commanded here by the Apostle Peter. Thank you for listening. The Church at Pecan Creek is located in Denton, Texas. This portion of Peter is very challenging to the Christian-mind, but it is clear that God is concerned about how we live in society, how we submit to authority, as a citizen, in our places of employment, and even in our homes. Remember that your obedience or disobedience to God is most observed by those in your home. May your presence, whether in society, in a workplace, or in your home, be a beautiful representation of Christ for all to see. Thank you for listening. God has called us to endure insult as Christ endured it. Just because you are a Christian and living a Christian-lifestyle does not mean that you will not suffer hatred and insult. Trust in God who will judge all sin justly. While you may be called to suffer, even unjust suffering, in this life, know that the One who bore your sins by dying for you, has risen from the dead and you are in His care. Even while suffering, you are still under the care of the Shepherd of your soul. Thank you for listening. The Church at Pecan Creek is located in Denton, Texas.
