1 John 2:23-27
1 John 2:23-27 January 12, 2020 Rest in the truth that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who has come in the flesh. Deceivers, liars, and antichrists will always be around. Allow doctrine to do what it is supposed to do, divide unbelievers from believers by exposing right and wrong belief. Identify those who claim to be right with God, but have actually rejected Jesus Christ and beware of them. You know the truth about who Jesus Christ is, and what He has done to provide eternal life, abide in it, remain in it, and do not be deceived. Thank you for listening. Who a person believes Jesus to be is no small matter. John is extremely black and white with what he teaches about true and false Christianity. In the previous passage, John teaches that if a person professes to be right with God yet loves the world, then, in reality, he or she hates God. In the passage today, John goes on to say that a person professing to be right with God must see Jesus as the Christ, or he or she is an antichrist. Remember, he gives them this information as a warning. Not all who say they believe in Jesus believe in the right Jesus.

It is not enough to say that we are Christians, we must believe in God’s only source of salvation the one and only one whom God sent, the Messiah, the Christ, who was God and man, who lived, died, rose, and ascended to save us from our sin.

Love of the world and love of God are incompatible. They are diametrically opposed to one another. As John writes to Christians, he does so in a way that exposes false Christians who love the world and only pretend to love God. If someone says that they love God, yet habitually express their love of the world through succumbing to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and taking pride in their sin, then they don’t love God. As Christians, we too must be careful sever affections for the world. See the desires for what they are: sinful and opposed to God. May we be found faithful in our love and allegiance to God. Don’t say you love God and flirt with the world.

John assures all Christians, no matter if they are spiritual children, youth, or adults, of their same position before God. All are forgiven children of God. As Christians, we should rightly assess our own stage of development. By doing so, hopefully, you will behave accordingly. Spiritual parents, nurture younger ones. Spiritual youth, be strong morally and doctrinally, revealing that you belong to the One who has overcome the Evil One. Spiritual newborns who now know God, grow in the Lord and be teachable. The good news of the gospel is that the greatest problem that every single person faces, sin, is solved. This is good news for the person who is hearing it for the first time, and it is good news for those who have been saved for years and years. Think of the words of John as they apply to you, “little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.” Believer, let the assurance that you are His and that your sins are forgiven by Him bring peace to your soul today. God is light, and if we are in the light, children of light, Children of God, then there will be a resemblance. So far, John has said that those who are in the light reveal themselves by having the same object of salvation, they confess their sins, they rest in Jesus Christ for forgiveness. And now John adds another essential expression of true believers; they love one another. Thank you for listening. The Church at Pecan Creek is located in Denton, Texas. Words are easy to say. Many people today say that they know Jesus, but their lives reveal otherwise. Such a person should have no confidence or assurance that he or she is truly saved. In fact, John calls them a liar, because their mouth says one thing but their life says another. How can you know that you are saved? Christ was and is the object of your forgiveness. Being a Christian does not mean that you are without sin. It does mean, however, that you see your sin and you hate that sin; you see the Savior and you love the Savior. You continue to confess your sin to the Savior and continue to trust in His blood for the forgiveness of your sins. Thank you for listening. The Church at Pecan Creek is located in Denton, Texas. The Apostle John is clear in his opening to 1 John that orthodoxy (right belief) and orthopraxy (right living) are necessary to be in fellowship with God. If a person rejects the historical Jesus as being man or as being God, they are not in fellowship with Him. Likewise, if a person professes correct doctrine, yet lives in darkness, their walking in the dark reveals that they are not in the light. Thank you for listening. 1 John was written to believers, Christians, who are dealing with false teaching about Jesus Christ that had come into their community. It was a form of Gnosticism, the belief that matter is evil and spirit is good. This belief caused the Gnostics to believe that Jesus could not have been a real human. John, like Christ and the other Apostles, does not tolerate false teaching. He writes this letter to re-affirm sound doctrine and to expose false doctrine. Thank you for listening.
